An all female trio, The Contractions featured Debbie Hopkins on drums, guitarist Mary Kelley, and Kathy Peck on bass guitar. All three sang, and they each wrote songs. In the early '80s, the idea of an all-female band was "still quite novel," Hopkins says. More than once she was told that she was a "pretty good drummer for a girl." She took no shit: "Someday," she'd sneer back, "maybe I'll be good for a man!" Hopkins says that Peck was the last of the trio to join. "Kathy told us she could play bass," she says. "She couldn't. But she learned really quickly."

Disturbing the Peace's chapter on The Contractions is based upon interviews with Debbie Hopkins and Kathy Peck.
