With their mix of musical chops and appealing songs, Pearl Harbor and the Explosions helped establish and define the character of the new record label launched by Howie Klein and Chris Knab. Vocalist Pearl E. Gates struck a winning balance, with an image halfway between undeniably sexy and bring-home-to-Mom adorable. The three musicians backing Pearl drew upon their superb, adventurous musicianship, effectively channeling it toward stripped-down, straightforward pop with just the right hint of what was coming to be known as new wave.

Disturbing the Peace's chapter on Pearl Harbor and the Explosions is based upon interviews with band members Pearl E. Gates and Peter Dunne, plus insights and memories from Jello Biafra, Joel Selvin, producer David Kahne, and 415 Records co-founders Howie Klein and Chris Knab.
